16:28 < Rumy-RIPENCC> Any questions or comments for Kurtis?
16:29 < arien> Networks should decide for themselves if and how they build their networks and how they want to arrange redundancy. There is no one answer.
16:29 < arien> One MAC address on multiple LANs: Many hybrid devices jus use the same MAC on each port (Cisco 6500/6700, Brocade, Force10).
16:29 < Rumy-RIPENCC> arien would you like me to read that out?
16:30 < Rumy-RIPENCC> if so, please let me know! And also let me know your full name and the organisation you work for?
16:31 < arien> Rumy: no need for that - i think the audience will say the same
16:31 < Rumy-RIPENCC> ok
16:31 < arien> arien -> Arien Vijn, AS1200, AMS-IX
16:31 < Rumy-RIPENCC> ah thought so :)
16:31 < Rumy-RIPENCC> let me know if you want me to read it out!

16:37 < Rumy-RIPENCC> The presentation has ended.
16:38 < ericAMSIX> Laggy ...
16:38 < Rumy-RIPENCC> this is the last comment, after that Joao will start his presentation
16:39 < AFI5-RIPE> where is joaos presentation?
16:39 -!- jpc1 [~jpc [at] dhcp-27-70 [dot] ripemtg [dot] ripe [dot] net] has joined #eix
16:39 < Rumy-RIPENCC> good question - does not seem to be online
16:40 < Rumy-RIPENCC> now the presentation has ended

16:40 < Rumy-RIPENCC> Joao Damas from ISC is starting his presentation "Update on ISC Routing Project"
16:40 < Rumy-RIPENCC> and this explains why there are no slides
16:41 < AFI5-RIPE> k
16:41 < AFI5-RIPE> but i cannot read the URL from the webstream

16:41 < davidc> someone's given the stenographer a list of complicated words this time? :-)
16:43 < Rumy-RIPENCC> Any questions or comments for Joao?
16:44 < Rumy-RIPENCC> The presentation has ended
16:44 < Rumy-RIPENCC> Wolfgang Tremmel from DE-CIX started his presentation "Proxy-Arp and Why it Must be Disabled When Connecting to an Internet-Exchange"

16:48 -!- dreamer [~7d1 [at] rosie-arch [dot] ipv6 [dot] ripe [dot] net] has joined #eix
16:48 < ytti> we don't really need proxy-arp, other than some migrations, which it can make easier, but not really
16:48 < ytti> local-proxy-arp OTOH, we actively need
16:48 -!- Chris_RIPENCC [~chrisb [at] dhcp-24-146 [dot] ripemtg [dot] ripe [dot] net] has quit [Quit: Chris_RIPENCC]
16:48 < ytti> and unfortunately IOS doesn't allow enabling local-proxy-arp without enabling proxy-arp
16:49 -!- p3rror [~7d1 [at] rosie-arch [dot] ipv6 [dot] ripe [dot] net] has joined #eix
16:49 < ericAMSIX> enabling local-proxy-arp let your router to answer every ARP requests, which is dreaded in IXP environment :)
16:50 < Rumy-RIPENCC> ytti would you like me to read that out for you?
16:50 < ytti> yeah, you wouldn't use it in IXP
16:50 -!- ripe418 [~c1001938 [at] rosie-arch [dot] ipv6 [dot] ripe [dot] net] has joined #eix
16:50 < Rumy-RIPENCC> i checked with Andy - he'd prefer all questions at the end - after Maksyms presentation
16:50 < ytti> you use local-proxy-arp when your customers are L2 separated, but need to talk toe ach other
16:50 < ytti> rumy, this isn't question, so no reason really
16:50 < Rumy-RIPENCC> ok!
16:51 < Rumy-RIPENCC> i can read comments too you know :P
16:51 < Rumy-RIPENCC> just shout if there is something i need to read out
16:51 < andyd> it might be nice to make an eix-document that asks vendors to switch it off by default.
16:51 -!- ripe418 [~c1001938 [at] rosie-arch [dot] ipv6 [dot] ripe [dot] net] has quit [Quit: CGI:IRC (EOF)]
16:51 < andyd> so maybe this is a very valid comment, ytti
16:52 < ytti> i actually opened TAC case to cisco few years back, asking them not to require use if proxy-arp when you need local-proxy-arp
16:52 < ytti> but reply was 'work as designed, we're not changing it'
16:53 < ytti> case 610104993 if someone wants to ask cisco for same thing :>
16:53 < dreamer> it might be at least nice to have it disabled on equipment that is SP oriented and not SOHO/SB at least
16:53 < ytti> i think default off should be for all devices always
16:53 < dreamer> leave it on ISR type of equipment if need be but anything that runs SP code, disable it
16:54 < ytti> but when you need local-proxy-arp for some legit usage cases, you shouldn't need to also enable proxy-arp
16:54 < ytti> silly that cisco has 'married' these two features
16:54 < ericAMSIX> Well one of my colleague mentioned a case when Proxy ARP is needed . Multiple ATM machines which do not have DHCP on and the default gateway changed ...
16:55 -!- p3rror [~7d1 [at] rosie-arch [dot] ipv6 [dot] ripe [dot] net] has quit [Quit: CGI:IRC]
16:55 < ericAMSIX> Instead of modifying the setting, the gateway router just proxy-arped the hell out of it :)
16:55 < ytti> that would fall inside 'some migrations', wouldn't it? :>
16:55 < dreamer> yes
16:55 < ytti> same way if you need to move one subnet from router to another router
16:55 < ericAMSIX> ah my colleague is 'dreamer' :D
16:55 < ytti> you can do it one machine at a time with proxy-arp
16:55 < dreamer> that's why I'm suggesting of leaving it on for non-SP equipment
16:56 < ytti> but these are imho all migration cases, not something you'd keep turned on
16:56 -!- Chris_RIPENCC [~chrisb [at] dhcp-24-146 [dot] ripemtg [dot] ripe [dot] net] has joined #eix
16:58 < dreamer> unless migration is a permanent state
16:58 < ytti> :>
16:58 < dreamer> which, silly as it may sound, it does happen

17:04 < Rumy-RIPENCC> Any questions/comments for Wolfgang and Maksym?
17:04 < Rumy-RIPENCC> now is the time :)
17:05 < andyd> Gert made a comment similar to ytti's.
17:05 < Rumy-RIPENCC> yes
17:05 < arien> It is not only on by default on Cisco - other vendors mimic Cisco.
17:06 < Rumy-RIPENCC> Arien do you want me to read that?
17:06 < arien> Never mind Ruby :)
17:06 < Rumy-RIPENCC> you guys talk too much ;P
17:06 < Rumy-RIPENCC> which is ok - but just add to it if you want me to read it out
17:07 < Rumy-RIPENCC> if you dont add it i will keep asking
