ACOnet (www.ACO.net) is the Austrian National Research and Education Network, physically established in 1990, operated since 1992 by the University of Vienna, in cooperation with other participants. ACOnet offers its members high-performance access via GÉANT to international academic networks, as well as to the Internet, supplemented by a rich set of community services. The University of Vienna and the ACOnet community have been pioneers in deploying and operating IPv4 and IPv6 infrastructures in Austria.
The Vienna Internet eXchange is a resilient, dual-site, high-performance, high-availability Internet Exchange Point (IXP) with national and international participants from the Central and Eastern European Region. It has been established in 1996 at and by the Vienna University Computer Center, which is still operating it. Since 2001 Interxion Austria is housing-partner for the second VIX location. Some reasons to celebrate in 2011 during RIPE63!
nic.at is the Austrian registry for all .at, .co.at and .or.at domains. The owner of nic.at is the non-profit Internet Foundation Austria (IPA) whose foundation purpose is the promotion of the Internet in Austria. nic.at regards itself as a competence center of expertise as well as a contact for questions around domains and the Austrian Internet.
The University of Vienna has played an essential role in the early days of Internet in Austria, and still does in providing two important services: ACOnet, the Austrian National Research and Education Network and the Vienna Internet eXchange. Last year, on the occasion of “20 Years of Internet in Austria”, a two-day anniversary celebration was hosted by the University of Vienna. After having been local host and sponsor for RIPE 33 in May 1999, it is a pleasure to welcome RIPE 63 in Vienna again!
